Off Grid is a collection born out of a collaboration between fine artists Laura Deems and Cameron Wilson Ritcher. Leading with form, color, and storytelling, the collection offers an intersection between the two artists’ motifs and practices.

Laura, a Birmingham-based artist, is known for her use of textile tools and mixed media to create arresting works on paper and canvas. Cameron, a Richmond-based artist, is known for his geometric motifs and assemblage paintings on panel. Both are contemporary colorists with established followings across the country; Off Grid represents both artists’ first large-scale collaborative collection.

Launching in November 2025 with an opening in Atlanta, Off Grid consists of a limited edition small body of work ranging from works on panel, sculptural motifs, neon, and tinted plexiglass.

Named for the duality between geometry and material that defines the collection, Off Grid is a collection full of contrasts that create intrigue. When asked about the collection and process of collaboration, Cameron Ritcher said, “I think Laura and I have both been able to create some sort of magic that exists beyond both of us [in this collection]. Yes, there are still “my” shapes and “her” shapes - but the way they speak to each other, it’s entirely new.” The collection is a convergence of the artists’ respective visual languages, made fresh and original. The works in the collection deal with shape and color, playing up Laura’s organic, floral, and feminine shapes in conversation with Cameron’s architectural, geometric shapes. Created to tell an intertwined story, each work in the collection offers a different perspective, a different lens, if you will, into the artists’ individual practices while also telling a tale of expanding their horizons, being pushed beyond their comfort zones.

Laura shares, “Off Grid carries a sense of both play and sophistication throughout. The color interaction is stimulating and unexpected. Our work differs greatly, yet we both create within a grid-based framework. Off Grid pulls us both out of our ‘known’ grids and into a new space.” The repetition of forms, contrast between materials used (textile, wood, acrylic, neon lights) is novel yet familiar. It’s completely original yet nostalgic for collectors who know one or both of the artists’ visual languages. Off Grid leads with playful energy that Laura and Cameron are excited to share with their audiences in November.

  • Off Grid invites viewers to ponder, reimagine, and tap into memory.

  • Each work offers a physical interplay of materials and color while also offering a metaphysical moment of contemplation - the storytelling of known shapes and unknown shapes, invoking memories that invite daydreaming.

  • Almost like a Japanese garden, these works offer a reflective, repetitive story that is different to each viewer based on his or her own life experience.

  • The intimate interplay of material is both peaceful and interestingly jarring - soft textiles adhered to rustic wooden boards, electric circles of vibrating lighting, and cut-out acrylic sheets of neon lemon.

  • The artists’ compositions converse and contrast across Off Grid’s finished works.

  • The push and pull of sharp edges and soft forms, unique mediums and familiar ones.

  • As one navigates through the pieces and the collection as a whole, shapes repeat, and a pattern forms.

  • Off Grid is a collection balancing geometry, color, and soft, recollective shapes.

  • It seeks to bring viewers on a journey of reflection, self-discovery, and joy through examination.
